Scale model of a mainframe installation
UvA Computer Museum catalogue nr 97.14
This is a scale model of the computer floor of the SARA computing
centre anno 1982. The model includes the CDC Cyber 170-70 and Cyber
170-825, a Modcomp multiplexer and an IBM 4341 system. The various
parts of these machines can be identified by pressing buttons
connected with small lamps in the model.
The picture shows the Cyber operator's console and a row of IBM
tapedrives. Only these tapedrives have been salvaged and are now in
our Computer Museum.
The scale model was donated by SARA. The Stichting
Academisch Rekencentrum Amsterdam used to be the computing centre
of the Universiteit van Amsterdam, Vrije Universiteit and CWI, the
Centre for Mathematics and Computer Science. Today (1999) SARA houses a
number of large supercomputers for nation-wide use, and a
visualization centre (with a CAVE system for immersive virtual
reality). Also SARA is a major node in various networks including
the Internet.
